A story of perseverance, breaking free from poverty

This week our featured police officer of the week broke barriers with his situation and overcame what seem to be an unbreakable cycle.  Despite the impossibility of their condition he dreamed of becoming a police officer. Join me as PEMS Danny Alburo reminisce his difficult childhood and how he changed the course of his life from poverty stricken to a well to do life at present.

PEMS Danny Abayon Alburo grew up in Barangay Tubog, Cawayan, Masbate. They are nine siblings; he is the middle child of four brothers and sisters.  His father is a farmer and his mother a plain housewife.

They lived frugally because their resources weren’t enough for all of them. PEMS Alburo experienced the hard life and never experienced any pleasantries when he was younger.

He recalled that he was skillful as a young boy, his father used to accompany him to go “Baling” or Group Fishing, a traditional fishing technique using large nets.

Aside from group fishing he also helped his father in tuba gathering along with his siblings.

During his elementary years, he recalled that they lived near the river and whenever it rained it would be difficult for him to cross the river. That’s why when he entered Grade IV he transferred to another school to continue his elementary education without the challenges and risk of crossing the overflowing river.

In high school he took his first two years of education in Western Masbate Roosevelt High School but later transferred to Cebu since it was already hard for his parents to send him to school.

When he transferred in Cebu, he worked during daytime in a bakery in Carbon Maket and studied during nighttime. For three years he endured back breaking labor just to make his dreams come true. In 1993 he completed five years of night high school in Cebu Central Colleges.

It was during this time that he first experienced air-conditioning inside a mall, on his day-off he and his co-workers usually spend time in the mall to experience the cold temperature in contrast to his working environment.

PEMS Alburo struggled again to continue his college education, he worked under a tailor to earn for pocket money, buy books and other personal needs. He finished Bachelor of Science in Criminology in the University of Cebu in 1997.

In September 16, 1998 he was officially hired as a member of the PNP.

According to PEMS Alburo “Paningkamot inubanan sa pag ampo ug kakugi, makab-ot ra jud ang pangandoy”.

He is inspired and loved by his wife Mrs. Anna Marie Mata Baton Alburo and his two kids, Mark Daniel and Danz Marion.

Currently, PEMS Danny Abayon Alburo is assigned at the Provincial Operations and Management Unit (POMU) as the Chief Clerk and soon to be the Provincial Executive Senior Police Officer.

To all those whose lives’ seems to be hopeless, reflect on the life of PEMS Alburo. Don’t let your poverty hinder your dreams seize every opportunity to change your fate. Just like PEMS Alburo, he wasn’t contented to be working in their farm and fishing.  He crossed the seas to work in a bakery and tailoring shop just to realize his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer.

Soon, he will retire and enjoy time with his family. If he didn’t take that leap to sacrifice he wouldn’t reap the fruits of his labor.

This is PEMS Danny Abayon Alburo, Mabuhi ka!
