Kota Park in Madridejos is a must-visit destination on the enchanting Bantayan Island, often dubbed the “living paradise” in the Northern part of Cebu. This simple yet historically rich park traces its origins back to the 1880s when it served as a Spanish fort, acting as a crucial watchtower against Moro Pirates during the Spanish era. Following this period, Kota Park transformed into a public cemetery for native Bantayanons.
Since the 1950s, the park has undergone rehabilitation and conversion into a beach resort, offering breathtaking views of the Visayan open sea and stunning sunsets. A concrete footbridge within the park connects to a floating balcony, providing visitors with an opportunity to observe various sea creatures. The bridge, spanning 187 meters, holds historical significance, constructed in a remarkable 40-day and 40-night period, symbolizing the sacrifices of the locals during that time.
Historically known as Lawis, Madridejos was founded in the mid-16th century by Loreto Mangubat, believed to be a direct descendant of Lapu-lapu, the Cebuano hero who defeated Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan. Lawis was the first organized settlement in Bantayan Island, accompanied by the establishment of Kota or Fort as a watchtower. In 1917, Lawis officially became Madridejos, named in honor of Benito Romero de Madridejos, the archbishop of Cebu. Madridejos is the third municipality on Bantayan Island, following Sta. Fe and the Municipality of Bantayan. Immerse yourself in the rich history and captivating beauty of Kota Park in Madridejos, a hidden gem waiting to be explored in this island paradise.
